Terms of Service

Effective date: 14 April 2026 · Last updated: 14 April 2026

These terms govern your use of the Society of Geophysicists & Computational Geoscientists ("SGCG") website at sgcg.org.ng, and your relationship with the Society as a registered member, abstract author, conference attendee, or visitor. By using the site you agree to these terms.

1. Eligibility

SGCG membership is open to people engaged in or preparing for a career in geophysics, computational geoscience, or related fields. The three membership tiers (Student, Young Professional, Experienced Professional) have their own entry criteria, which we verify through the documents you upload.

2. Your account

  • Provide accurate information when registering. If your details change, update your profile or email us.
  • Keep your password confidential. You are responsible for any action taken through your account.
  • You may have only one member account. Duplicate accounts may be merged or closed.
  • Admin accounts are granted only to officers of the Society and may be revoked when a term ends.

3. Membership dues

  • Membership runs on an annual cycle from 1 February to 1 February. Dues are due on 1 February each year.
  • Unpaid dues accumulate: if you miss a year, the next year's bill reflects the arrears.
  • Paying reactivates your account and covers the current membership year.
  • Payments are final; we do not refund membership dues once paid.

4. Payments

  • Online payments are processed by Paystack. Their terms and privacy policy also apply to the payment step.
  • We do not store your card details. Paystack handles the card data directly.
  • For conference registration, only Paystack is accepted. For membership dues, bank transfers into the SGCG Ecobank account are accepted; email the teller slip to sgcg.convener@gmail.com and an officer will activate your membership.
  • If Paystack reports your payment failed or was reversed, your membership or registration will not be activated.

5. Conference registration

  • Registering with the online form creates a provisional record. You must verify your email and complete payment for your seat to be confirmed.
  • Your registration ID (e.g. GS2026/REG/0001) is issued only after payment succeeds. Bring it to check in at the venue.
  • Conference registration fees are non-refundable. If the Society cancels or reschedules the event, we will offer rebooking for the next occurrence.
  • By registering you agree to be photographed or recorded during conference sessions for Society use (website, reports, social media). Tell the convener in advance if you object.

6. Abstract submissions

  • Submissions must be original work for which you have the right to present.
  • You retain copyright to your abstract. By submitting you grant SGCG a non-exclusive licence to review, archive, and publish your abstract in the conference programme and proceedings.
  • All co-authors must be aware of and agree to the submission.
  • Acceptance is at the discretion of the review committee and requires that the presenting author register for the conference.
  • Do not submit content that is defamatory, fraudulent, plagiarised, or that infringes another person's rights.

7. Acceptable use of the site

Do not:

  • Attempt to break, probe, or flood the site with abusive traffic.
  • Upload malware, scripts, or content designed to harm others.
  • Impersonate another person or member.
  • Use automated tools to scrape member data or submit forms.
  • Use the community feed to harass, defame, or spam other members.

We may suspend or remove accounts that violate these rules.

8. Content you post (community feed, engagement forms)

You are responsible for anything you post. You grant SGCG a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to display it within the site for its intended purpose. We may remove posts that violate these terms or Nigerian law.

9. Society communications

As a member you may receive transactional email (account, payment, renewal reminders) and occasional Society announcements. Newsletter subscriptions are separate and can be cancelled any time via the unsubscribe link.

10. Disclaimers

  • The site is provided "as is". We make reasonable efforts to keep it running but do not guarantee uninterrupted availability.
  • Content on the site, including material submitted by authors or partners, is for information and scholarly use; it does not constitute professional advice.
  • External links are provided as a convenience. We do not endorse or take responsibility for third-party content.

11. Liability

To the extent permitted by Nigerian law, SGCG is not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from your use of the site. Our total liability, if any, is limited to the amount you have paid to SGCG in the preceding 12 months.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of Nigeria.

13. Changes

We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be announced to members by email and posted here before they take effect. Continued use of the site after the effective date means you accept the revised terms.
