History
The Idea
Dr Aaron Enechojo Auduson, now a Professor of Geophysics, conceived the idea of forming a professional body for Geophysicists while on a geophysical fieldwork with Michael Adewale Ibitomi, one of his Field Engineers at League Geo-Services Limited. Upon confirming the absence of any professional Geophysical body in Nigeria, Dr Auduson resolved that a new one must be formed and immediately began consulting prospective members.
Birth of the Society
Dr Auduson created a WhatsApp platform and added many prospective members. The initial name proposed was the Nigerian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (NSEG).
Inaugural Meeting — Abuja
The members convened physically in Abuja for an inaugural meeting and press conference, attended by 15 persons. It was agreed the Society should be renamed the Nigerian Geophysical Union (NGU) after the American Geophysical Union (AGU), to be more encompassing.
Official Incorporation & 1st Conference
The Society was finally incorporated as the Society of Geophysicists and Computational Geoscientists (SGCG). The inaugural GEO-SPECTRUM conference brought researchers, students, and industry professionals together for groundbreaking discussions.
2nd International Conference
GEO-SPECTRUM 2025 expanded with international participation at the University of Lagos, with more tracks and deeper focus on computational geoscience. Theme: Advancing Geophysics and Computational Geosciences for a Sustainable Future.
